Book Giveaway

3 February 2011 · 5 Comments

Hey, know anybody who might want a sock knitting book and some yarn?  The lovely Laura Nelkin from Schaefer Yarn is having a wee giveaway of the book and a skein of Nichole in the color Chamomile.  My love of Nichole is well documented.  If you’ve not had a chance to use it yet, this might be the perfect excuse!

There might just possibly be a wee giveaway of the book over here.  Ya know….just on the outside chance that one of you happened to want a free copy.  Not that any of you knit socks or anything like that.  Does it make me a crazy stalker if I’ve refreshed a time or two to read the comments?

P.S. Oh, and if you’re worried about that ‘skill testing question’ thing, I think it’s the Canadian equivalent of the no purchase necessary fine print on contests in the U.S. (and it may only apply to Canadian winners, though I’m not sure).  Don’t let it scare you away!

Congratulations to Linda who won the yarn, and thank you to everyone for your lovely comments.  I, personally, do not believe in the black/gray/navy winter coat.  I feel if I have to wear a coat, it had better be bright and colorful.  I have a pale blue light weight coat, a red heavy coat, a purple dressy coat, and a green cloak for those rare situations when a cloak really is the correct answer.  Of course I also feel that gloves/scarves/hats have to go with each other and with the coat.  It leads to a rather staggering number of accessories, but I’m a knitter, so that’s not really a problem.

Petiole

Petiole is out!  This was my super speedy “it’s cold and I have to wear a coat and I don’t want to wear a coat…so I’ll distract myself with a hat” project.  I’m sure that says something unflattering about my mental faculties, but I like the hat, and I didn’t freeze to death from refusing to wear a coat, so apparently it worked.  The wrist warmers were just a bonus squeezed out of the few yards leftover when the hat was done.

I made both projects (in a size medium) out of one skein of Aslan Trends Bariloche in Tango Reds, though it took almost every inch of it.  While I’m all out of the red (I had to make something that matched my coat after all), I do have a skein of the same yarn in Grape Jam to give away.  If you’d like it to come live with you, leave me a comment.  Tell me what color your favorite winter coat is (or what color coat you’d like to have).  Be sure you use a real email address (I’m the only one who will see it, and I won’t use it for anything other than contacting the winner).  I’ll leave comments open till early Wednesday morning, then randomly select one as the winner.

Stay warm, and Happy New Year!

And the winner is Christine!  Check out her lovely socks, I know she’ll put the yarn to good use.  I’ve sent off an email to ask for a mailing address.  And to answer her question, the Sock Plus 8 is a bit more tightly twisted than SG Bugga, and the Bugga is a bit softer and fuzzier.  They’re about the same thickness, and both come in drop dead gorgeous colors.  I’d be happy to use either (and both are going to be in the book), and think they’d likely work for a lot of the same patterns.

And to everyone who entered, thank you so much for all your nice comments!  People seem to really like this pattern, and I’m thrilled by the reception.  I can’t wait to start seeing it knit up.

The whole time I was making them, I kept thinking they would look stunning as black knee highs.  I’ve got long legs, and I’m very very lazy, so I couldn’t quite bring myself to make my own.  The lace pattern is unusually stretchy though, so I think it would likely work well.  If you’re interested, I’d suggest making the cuff and the portion of the sock that is over your calf muscle with a slightly larger needle and then going down to the regular needle for the lower part of your leg and foot.  If anybody does end up doing it (in any color of course), send me pictures.  I’ll totally send a wee present to whoever first sends me pics of a completed pair!

Congratulations to Jolene.  I’ll be in touch to arrange getting her favorite, Sky Pirate, out to her.  That color was a favorite for lots of folks and I’m sure Jolene will enjoy it.  Thanks so much to everyone who entered.  I love reading all the things you have to say!

I’ve got lots to share, and alas not much time to share it.  I’ll be back shortly with more of the silk retreat, I’ve got a new sock almost finished, and more book news.  Alas, doing all this stuff is rather cutting into the time needed to write about it.  Someday I’m sure I’ll find the perfect balance.  Just not this week.

Quick Reminder

Just popping in with a quick reminder that tomorrow is the last day to enter the giveaway for some of Suzan’s lovely yarn.  I’ll be back Wednesday with a winner and the next installment in my trip.
