Petiole

ˈpe-tē-ˌōl noun

- the stalk by which a leaf is attached to a stem

There comes a point every winter where I have to face facts and acknowledge that it has gotten cold. Not brisk, not chilly – cold. The sort of cold where it’s irresponsible to go out without a proper coat. I put it off as long as I can every year, but it always happens eventually.

This year’s realization came as I was planning a little getaway. I thought a new hat might soften the blow. I cast on the afternoon before I left, finished in the car the next day, blocked it overnight on the hotel’s ice bucket, and wore it all during the trip. I had just enough yarn left over to eek out a pair of tiny matching wrist warmers.

The pattern is written in 4 sizes. The final size depends on your gauge and quite adjustable. There is a table included to help you figure you what gauge and size you need to get a particular size.  Hat sizes range from 12 to 27 inches (at the brim), mitt sizes range from 4 to 9 inches (at the cuff).

The hat shown is made in a size medium and measures about 23.5 inches at the brim.  The wrist warmers are made in a size medium and measure about 7.5 inches at the cuff.  Both were made from a single skein of Aslan Trends Bariloche in Tango Reds.

The pattern contains instructions for both the hat and the mitts and costs $4.50.
