Foliate
\ˈfō-lē-ət\
adjective
- of or relating to leaves, shaped like a leaf
This set is a bit of an experiment in scale. The main lace pattern is made with just one row of increases and decreases. The bottom edge of the cowl uses 5 repeats of that row to produce a deep ruffled edge, and the top uses 2 repeats to frame your face. The cuff of the mitt uses 2 repeats for just a bit of frill at your wrist, while the top is left plain to ensure the mitts are both practical and comfortable.
Shown in Barking Dog Yarns Galaxy in the color Robin Hood. The set as shown can easily be made with less than 300 yards of sport weight yarn (of course if you make your mitts elbow length or make your cowl three feet tall, you’ll need more yarn). The mitts took about 75 yards and the cowl about 200 yards.
The cowl is written in 3 sizes. The final size depends on your gauge and is nearly endlessly adjustable. Suggestions are given for gauges of 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, and 5.5 stitches per inch to get sizes between 21 and 28 inches.
The mitt is written in 1 size. The finished size will range from 7 to 9 inches depending on your gauge.
The pattern includes instructions for both the cowl and the mitts and costs $4.50.
