Dippers are socks for the slightly adventurous knitter. There is a special stitch, a chart, and a funky gusset. That’s ok though, aren’t you tired of boring socks?
When I showed the special stitch in this sock to my husband and asked him what I should call them, he said they looked like honey dippers. Given the rather curvilinear nature of both the stitch pattern and the resulting sock, it seemed to fit, and the name stuck.
This pattern produces a fabric that is not completely flat. It is actually rather crumpled at first. Do not despair! You know how when you block lace it goes from looking like a rumpled mess to looking neat and orderly? Yeah, addictive isn’t it? These socks do the same thing, except that your foot and leg take care of the transformation without the pins (or patience) needed for proper blocking. The special stitches in them also help defeat the dreaded pooling that can be a problem with multi color yarns.
