Not My Strong Suit

5 February 2011 · 53 Comments

So the plan had been to put this pattern up on Monday.  But it’s ready now, and I don’t really do patience if I can help it.  Also, there might just possibly be something else going on on Monday that I’ll want to squee about.  So I’m putting it out now.  Handy thing, making your own schedule.

These are, of course, the magical, sanity-saving, purple hats.  One is for me, and one has made its way into the post to head off to my mom.  The first of these was cast on within hours of getting my hands on the new Everlasting 12 ply dk by Dream in Color.  I remain unreasonably smitten with it.  It’s more or less perfect, and it’s the first time I’ve seen one of the ‘zillions of tiny plies’ style yarns in a heavier weight.  I’ve already gotten scads more for another project and will be casting on soon.

And now, because the people at Dream in Color are awesome, I can share this new obsession treat with you.  I’ve got two skeins of Everlasting 12 ply dk in the color Amethyst to give away.  You can easily make both of these hats from one skein of yarn (I made 2 big hats from one skein and had about 30 yards leftover).

If you want to give it a try yourself, go take a look at the Everlasting colors, pick your favorite (or favorites, I’ve not been able to narrow it down much really), and leave me a comment telling me which ones you like best.  Remember, I’ve got Amethyst, the one used in the hat to give away, I’m just shamelessly polling you to find out what colors you like (and to pad out my next shopping list). Do be sure to use your real email address (no one but me will see it, and I won’t use it for anything other than to notify the winner).  I’ll keep comments open until Tuesday evening, and announce winners on Wednesday.

In the meantime, if your own sanity needs a little restoration, you can find the pattern here.

I’ll never forgive you – those Everlasting colors are visually addictive. And forget choosing. 1st Eggplant caught my eye, then Galaxy, then I saw Congo, & Wilderness, & … I’m going to go broke. But if I do have to pick one, it’s Eggplant that’s stolen my heart.

I would love to try some of the Everlasting in the colorway, Tidal. I have used several of DIC’s yarns and have LOVED them all. Growing up on the coast of south Georgia, this colorway reminds me of the salt marshes…peachesforever on Ravelry

Wow… just beautiful colors… Hmmm not easy to pick one… I’m in a purple mood today so I think I would go with Angel.

Well I’m having a bit of a purple thing at the moment so I love the amethyst, also love the blues especially rain cloud.

I think the Amethyst might be my actual favorite (which would be really convenient if I won)! It probably has something to do with the fact that I’m really into jewel tones right now.

Well, Shy & Pinot both caught my eye, but anything by DIC is a good yarn if you ask me!

Very cute hats,

I am the lucky mom who has a beautiful new hat. The yarn is soft and lovely which makes the hat easy to stick in my coat pocket when I come inside on cold winter days. Thanks Hunter, I love it!

Morning Glory or maybe Wineberry? Very hard to make a choice.

I think Tidewater is probably my favorite – they have so many pretty colors! I love your hat, too!

Oh gosh, it is so hard to choose! I’ve always loved Dream in Color for for how saturated their colors are. But if I had to pick just one, I’d pick Bitter. Or Island, or Crisp, or Grow… Hm.

rain cloud, without a doubt!

Tidewater….but then there are so many pretties that it is hard to pick just one!

Oh man – I’m so gonna go broke. Lovely lovely stuff. I adore the Tidewater – but I like the amethyst too – I’ve always had a thing for colors named for my birthstone. :D

I love smooshy sock yarn! I haven’t tried the 12 ply dk, but I bet it’s awesome! The colorway called “Tidal” caught my eye.

OMG how to choose, but as it is super hot and tropical here at the moment, something cool like tidewater, or rain cloud, hmmmm maybe not anything to do with rain.
Got to go with those blues They are all so gorgeous

What color don’t I like?! Since I have to pick only 1, it’s Blue Fish. But then there’s your Amethyst, and Concord, then there’s Morning Glory…. Any would look very nice in the hat!

I’m not sure I can narrow it down, so I’ll just go with the first two that caught my eye: Bitter and Gitt. Can you tell I’m feeling green today? Tomorrow I would probably pick two completely different colours (Daylily or Concord?). Yes, yes, I’m a traitor to my own tastes. There is no such thing as a favourite colour in my head.
Though that Amethyst would look awfully good *on* my head. Hmm…

Thank you for sending me on a daydreaming journey! The colors are all beautiful. I was taken with the subtleties of Raincloud and really love Plenty as well. The Amethyst is very nice, too!

I found your hat on ravelry yesterday when trawling through hat groups, and I’m in love with it. I love the Amethyst colour, but the Victoria colourway is also gorgeous!

Too, too difficult. Maybe Tidewater 723. Or perhaps Holly 716 or possibly Victoria 726. No, wait, Blue Fish 715. Hang on a bit… Wilderness 705…

Pah – don’t ask me to choose. That’s not fair. I’m campaigning for Yarn Equality.

What? Ok. Tidewater it is then, if I must choose

How can I choose just one? I love every single one of them? Really. So I’m going to randomly choose one — Brilliant. Now I’ll choose another — Tidewater. And I’ll keep going until I’ve chosen them all. I really, really love every.single.one.

OMG, I love all the colors, but I think for sanity’s sake, something like Wilderness (wildness?) will remind me that soon it will be early spring! Or maybe Daylily! All of them are beautiful! I’m so glad you have published this hat pattern!

Tidewater (723) for sure. It looks almost like a black opal color scheme mixed with the fading colors of a dark sunset. When the sun is gone and the light is just about to be too dark but still lighting up the sky. So purdy :)

I love the color Blue Fish. The subtle variations of that awesomely saturated teal color make me drool!

I will have to buy some in “Grow”. I adore green, but almost all greens have something wrong with them as far as I’m concerned, but this is perfect! I love “Nebula” as well but “Grow” wins hands down.

Ooh, so many lovelies! I have to go with Wineberry for the winner, but who can resist a colorway that shares their name (Holly)? :)

You meanie-making us look at all that lovely yarn! It was a hard choice but my favorite is #747-Brownie. I do like the greens also and Amethyst is also gorgeous-especially when shown off in your lovely hat!

Patience is massively overrated!

In the interest of letting you know what colours your readers enjoy…I like Dive and Morning Glory. Then Blue Fish, Passion, and Rain Cloud. Oh, to feel helpful so early in the day, and in regards to pretty colours!

Angel, Poppy, Chili and Morning Glory. And Rosy. Brilliant and Tranquil are also good for blues. Basalt and Pinot are also good. Bitter and Herbal are also good. My goodness, they have some awesome colours.

Amethyst and Galaxy are my favorites, but then, I’m a purple fanatic. Pinot looks nice, too.

I have been wanting to try Dream in Color.

I love
eggplant, wineberry, dive, angel, and pinot.

but of course if I have to choose just one, it would be wineberry.

Today must be a bad reading day. “Cool, the hats are published. Wow, 37 comments, they’re well popular.”

Yarn, now I get it. Brownie or basalt. I wanna try that yarn.

OOOOHHHHHH – well I love the Amethyst (it’s my birthstone so how could I not), but Blue Fish is beautiful, oh and wait.. how about Wineberry and Daylilly and Tidewater. Sorry; I can’t seem to narrow it down either.

I am just in love with Cloudy! Looks like the Pacific Ocean off Vancouver, British Columbia this time of the year.
Purple is quite lovely too; am finally an ‘old enough’ woman to wear purple proudly!
Love your blog!

Oh so not good for the no more new yarn for the month you’ve already splurged enough! thing I’m trying to do right now. And we’re only a week in! Good thing it’s a short month. I would have to go with Wilderness as my favorite, today anyway.

I had the pleasure of testing this pattern and it is easy and intuitive and a good example of the total being greater than the sum of it’s parts. I am on hat 3 from the pattern in yet a 3rd yarn. They all look different but spectacular. I love the amethyst color in the DIC Everlasting with Wineberry and Morning Glory being close behind.

Thanks, Hunter, for a great knit!

that’s a great hat! and the Amethyst is gorgeous – of course it’s my favorite. OK, now I’ll go look at the other colors….Angel and Eggplant and Heavenly are great purples too…oh and wilderness, rain cloud, surf, and pinot all remind me of their names sakes…Was I supposed to choose just one??

Tidewater, #723. I love all the other semisolid colorways, but this semi-variegated colorway sings to my heart.

Amethyst calls to me. Actually, I might be hearing a chorus of DIC yarns calling to me. Quite a seductive chorus, that lot!

It’s very hard to choose favorites when dealing with yarn. I do love the Amethyst! I would love to see the yarns in person but just from looking at the website, I would also like to knit something in the Indigo, Morning Glory, and the Daylily is calling out to me.

Great hats by the way!
