Somewhere Something Went Terribly Awry

So I have seen lots of examples of brioche stitch, and tend to think they look rather nifty. Then the other day I read a two sentence description of the gist of the process. Armed with this rather scanty information, I decided I could do it. I had seen a picture where two different colors of yarn made vertical stripes, and I decided that would be an excellent place to start. Turns out I’m not that cool. Not even a little. Not by a long shot. I ended up with the mess over there on the left.
Now it’s a bit hard to see exactly what’s going on, as these are two rather colorful yarns, so I did a bit of a solid color swatch to see if I could figure it out. That’s over there on the right.
Alas, they are decidedly non-stripe like. They are a few other things though…namely stretchy, seriously smooshy, the same on both sides, and completely curl proof. It might have potential. But before I get too distracted by it, I should figure out a few things. First, what the heck is it? I’m sure it must have a name other than bungled brioche. Second, where should I go to figure out the proper way to do brioche (as I apparently can’t simply intuit it on my own)? Does anyone recommend a particular book or website?

Hey, Hunter, check out Nancy Marchant’s site, thebriochestitch.com – she has really good descriptions of brioche stitch and how to do it both in the round and flat. It’s hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like somehow you’re missing a loop – you should be knitting a K and the YO together on each row, then do a YO before the P stitch. BTW, I love that yarn on the left, with the bright flashes livening up the chocolate color!

Just to clarify, after I thought about it for a minute: Your set up row should be a regular K1,P1. Next row: P1, YO, K1 across. Third row starts the brioche: P1, YO, K1 and YO from previous row together. Now that I’ve made it clear as mud, check out Nancy’s site

Thanks, I will totally do that. Now, to decide if I like whatever the heck I’m doing enough to play with it, or do I rip it in a fit of pique. And the yarn is by the (sadly defunct) Sheep Shop Yarn in their sock base. I love it and I’m sad it’s gone.

Oh, I hadn’t heard that about Sheep Shop – you used that for the Greenhorns, didn’t you? I liked that colorway so much I got some and made a cowl with it. I guess I should have stocked up!

Drunken Brioche? Tipsy Brioche? I wonder if your YO is getting paired with the wrong stitch. Where did you read that two sentence description?
There’s a bunch of YouTubes you can watch if visual learning is your style.

Yup, that’s exactly where I used it. I have only one skein of their ‘modern’ color (the brown and turquoise one) and I wish I had another. I totally love it, and would make socks if I had two. As it is, it may be destined for some scarfy goodness.

I’ve now got the brilliant new brioche book on order from Amazon, and I’m sure it will help. Meanwhile, I kind of like this (though it is slow going) and may keep on with it. Perhaps it will be my ‘sit in a bowl and look pretty and I’ll knit a row every now and then’ project.
