Calcareous
21 October 2009 · 58 Comments
Calcareous is live, click here if you’d like to make yourself a pair, or to find out what I meant by yesterday’s crack about my misspent youth.
I also have the distinct pleasure of announcing that Sharon at Three Irish Girls has graciously agreed to donate a skein of the gorgeous Adorn Sock yarn I used to make these socks to one lucky reader!
Now lately, I’ve had the marvelous experience of being contacted by several talented yarn dyers asking me to design patterns for them. This has been (and continues to be) great fun, but that’s not what happened here. Here, I saw the Three Irish Girls yarn at Sock Summit, fell madly in love, and simply had to have it. There was no other choice, it had to be mine. I got it home, and turned it into socks as quickly as possible. Calcareous is the result.
Once they were finished, I gathered up my courage, showed a picture of them to Sharon, and asked if maybe just maybe she’d be willing to donate a skein of the yarn to the blog. She said yes, so now I get to share the fun of this yarn with one of you!
So here’s the plan. I’m hooked and will have to knit with this yarn again. The only difficulty is picking a colorway. So, if you want to be entered for a chance to win the yarn, go to Three Irish Girls, look at the lovely colors, and leave a post here telling me which one I should knit with next. I’ll leave the comments open till about noon eastern time, on Friday, October 23. Later on Friday, I’ll randomly pick a winner from the comments and email that person with more information.
EDIT: Don’t forget that you need to mention one of Three Irish Girl’s colorways to qualify for the drawing…Some of the comments haven’t, and I thought I’d mention it again to be sure!
ETA: Closing comments now, will come back later to post the winner!

I adore the Liam, with the warm colors of browns and soft blue, ideal colors for those winter months ahead and looks like it would be a beautiful choice for a newly designed sock pattern.

I vote for Three Irish Girl’s SHANNON. I
knit the Brigit socks with Shannon on the Adorn base, and the cables just popped. The color shown on 3IG webite is not as emerald green as Shannon really is!

I love all of the 3IG colors, but I’ve been eying Nial lately. I think you should give that one a try.

Choosing just one of Sharon’s gorgeous colorways is very difficult! But, I would love to see something in Madigan. It’s such a unique colorway.

Hunter, Calcareous is lovely!!! There are so many wonderful choices among Irish Girls’ colorways, but as I’m in a pink mood, I’d have to vote for using Megan next, followed by Colleen and then maybe by Roison. It doesn’t matter which one you pick – they’re all so beautiful!

With the holidays approaching, a rich jewel tone caught my eye in “Cladagh” in the McClellan Fingering base. What could be more comfy on one’s feet than some merino and bamboo. Perfect for enjoying great company during a season of celebration?
I, too, as others have commented am sad I missed out on testing the Calcareous, it looks like it will be so fun to knit! Congrats on your success.

Love Grady — warm, Fall colors, but lots of contrast makes for a design challenge. I know you’re up to it, though!

It’s so hard to pick because all of the colorways are gorgeous. I have a sock otn in Nora, which I LOVE, but my heart is really lost in Skye, I can’t even wind it yet.

I absolutely love your pattern and have been a 3IG addict for a while now.
I would suggest my favorite non-club colorways of Skye or Liam, or a club colorway of Halcyon

Love your patterns and this new sock I’ll make again. I made a pair of Popped in the Arctic Circle socks for myself, my first pair for myself and fourth pair I’ve made. I called it “in the Arctic Circle” for the color, which is currently exclusively had through the Three Irish Girls’ Yarn Club, which are well worth joining- Stash Menagerie is above sport weight yarns, Sock Yarnista are sport and lighter weight yarns, Pick of the Knitter is where you choose one base to get each month.
I’d love for you to make a pair of socks with Cian as yellow is my favorite color. The stitch definition would stand out more as well. Plus, it’s a sunny, happy color.
Please keep designing. Love your work. Thanks for the great patterns.

While I’m working with (and loving) Cian right now, I think that you should pick Byrne. Doesn’t it just scream of walking in a fall pine forest?

I wish abundant luck to all who enter the contest! May you find the same joy that I experienced last month! I will intentionally omit the yarn colorway because I don’t feel it’s fair for me to win again, yet the colors are so tempting! I will have to buy some of this yummy yarn for myself! Great job, again…another fantastic pattern, Hunter!

I think I have to add to the many suggests for Irish Sea– those teals are just too pretty to resist. More importantly, though, gorgeous new pattern!
