Heresy I know, but very occasionally I do knit something other than socks. Don’t worry, I’m not straying too far afield this time.
Often, when knitting socks, there is a little nugget of yarn leftover when you’re finished. It’s not really enough to make another sock, but it’s far too much to throw away. Eventually (surprisingly quickly if we’re being honest), you can amass quite a collection of these little balls of color. Some people turn them into marvelous blankets or other gigantic projects. I haven’t the patience. Some people turn them into seriously colorful socks. I’m too lazy to weave in all the ends. I wanted something else, so I made these.
They are simple and quick little fingerless gloves. They are heavily ribbed, so they stretch dramatically. They are also very open and airy, so they take a surprisingly tiny amount of yarn. The first of the pair weighed in at a mere 16 grams. The second is on the needles, the pattern is about to go out to testers, and the gloves themselves are destined to be a birthday present.
Now for a question. I was thinking of releasing the pattern for a very small cost, maybe $2.50, but also as a freebie if you buy another pattern. Good idea, or terrible in some secret unexpected way I can’t see?

Wow, you guys like yarn! The site has been up for about six months and I had almost as many comments on the yarn giveaway post as on all the others put together. I won’t keep you in suspense, the results, as generated by the random number generator on random.org is Ellen at number 31. I will send you an email today to get your address and will have the package in the mail tomorrow or the next day.
This has been fun, I’ll have to see if I can do more of these yarn giveaways in the future. The next socks to be released should be the Xanthophyll socks, and then a free pair for a knit along on Ravelry. More details to come about both as they get closer.

Bines is live!
To celebrate I’m having a giveaway. The Schaefer Yarn Company has graciously donated a skein of their lovely Heather yarn in Dian Fossey (that’s the yarn I knit them in, just to be clear), and I’m giving away a copy of the pattern (or a copy of a different pattern if that’s what the winner would prefer).
If you’d like a chance to win the yarn and pattern, just leave a comment on this post. I will leave comments open till Monday evening. On Tuesday I’ll randomly pick one person from the comments and contact them to get their address and mail them their loot. Just be sure you use a real email address when you leave a comment, or else I won’t have a way to contact you. Don’t worry, I’m not organized enough to do anything nefarious with your email and no one else will see it.

The pattern for Bines is finished, and I will be releasing it tomorrow. Bines was knit with one of the yarns that Schaefer gave me in return for a pattern I designed for them. When they saw Bines, they liked them, so this pattern will be getting added to their library as well.
To celebrate the pattern release I’m having a little give away. The folks at Schaefer have graciously offered to provide a skein of their Heather yarn in the color Dian Fossey (the same color and yarn I used to make the original socks) to one of my readers. I’ll provide a copy of the pattern (or any of my other patterns if you prefer) to go with it. I’ll post the details here tomorrow when the sock pattern goes live.

It has been a shamefully long time since I put up a picture of a new knitting project. So, without further ado, the newest socks:

They are called Xanthophyll and are knit with the lovely Zoe Sock from Shalimar Yarns in the color Sapote. This is one of the yarns I got at Sock Summit in exchange for a design. Zoe is a nice crisp merino and is a treat to work with. The skein has a generous 450 yards, and yellow is The Boy’s favorite color, so it seemed obvious that this yarn should turn into socks for him. They were my vacation knitting while we were in Maine, and that thing in the background is the ocean…far more picturesque than anything to be found in my back yard.
I’ve got other knitting (another pair of brand new socks) and a shocking number of yarn purchases to show off over the next few days, but now I must go tackle the rather alarming pile of vacation laundry that followed me back from Maine.

I’ve been off in the woods. Of course my version of woods features comfy beds, delicious food, roaring fires, and complete protection from the elements. On the way to and from the woods I may have found a dozen or so yarn stores and accidentally bought the occasional bit of yarn. I might also have cast on another sock. Details and pictures to come over the next few days once I have my real computer and have crawled out from under the yarn pile.
