Xanthophyll

xanthophyllaltXanthophyll socks are live, and the pattern is here!

To celebrate their release, the folks at Shalimar Yarns have kindly offered to donate a skein of the lovely Zoe Sock yarn I used to make them to one lucky reader.

To have a chance to win, just go over to their website, find your favorite color of the Zoe Sock yarn, and leave the name of it in the comments.  You can leave other stuff too of course (I find reading comments strangely entertaining) but you have to leave a color name to win.  I’ll leave the comments open until Monday evening.  Then on Tuesday I’ll randomly pick a winner from among them.  Just be sure to use a working email address to leave your comment so I can contact you if you win.  I promise I won’t do anything with your email address other than contact you if you’ve won!

xanthophyllmain2One small reminder, until the end of the month I’m giving away a free copy of the pattern for the Colophon mitts if you buy any of my sock patterns.  The details of that offer are here if you’re interested.

Saw these on “newest patterns” on Ravelry. lovely! I’m not (yet) much of a sock knitter, and my next knitting goal is to become one. I like Shalimar Zoe’s in Juniper Berry – so cool and oceany. Thanks!

Lovely pattern! I reallly need

(As for the Zoe yarn, I’m partial to the Lychee. Cause a girl can never have too many purple socks!)

I love the pattern and think it would look wonderful in Chestnut. What a great gift this would make.

Oh wow. I love a lot of the Zoe colors, but I am practically drooling over Corazon. :)

I agree with you about yellow. I see it as more of a fall color as well. Pale yellow is more spring and Easter for me, but golden yellow is definitely autumn.

Mmm. These socks are lovely. I think I like the Saffron colourway the best.

Wow… those colors are AWESOME.. and you expect me to choose just one… I’ve bookmarked the site for future purchases… but “peonies” really stood out for me! but I think your socks would look great in sapote.

I love the Saffron colorway, myself. And, I agree with you 100%, I too have always considered Yellow and it’s hues more of an Auntumn color than a Spring color, making no surprise to me that this month’s color for the SKA KAL is YELLOW. Thanks for the contest.

acadia is my favorite. do you use these yarns for all your sock pattern? i have been following your patterns on the test knitting group and they are very creative.

I think my favorite of the Zoe colorways, or at least the one that’s catching my eye at the moment, is Tide Pool. But I have the saffron color in the Honey Worsted and I love it too.

And personally, I think yellow is an all-year long color. But then again, I’m going through a bit of an obsessive period with the color yellow, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I love Blueberry – it would look fantastic with denim.

“I’ve never understood why people think of yellow as a spring color. It’s always reminded me far more of autumn.” I totally agree! I love all the semi-solid yarn colors, but my favorite is “Juniper Berry”.

Ooh… I like all of them, especially ‘Dirty Sand’ and ‘Tidepool’

Maybe it all makes sense now, that I like beachey colours, since I live right next to the ocean!

love your pattern!

Your socks are gorgeous. I guess I will be buying another pattern!

I am currently knitting a shawl with Zoe Sock yarn in the color Curry, which is not listed. But I really like Blueberry – I love the subtle shading of the blue and think it would be great with blue jeans, which is what I wear to work most of the time.

risiko

September 25th, 2009 at 3:21 pm

the most beautiful color i might ever have seen in my entire life–today anyway–is the concord grape stonewash colorway that is on the blog but not on the website, so i can’t buy a lot of it and really irritate my husband the yarn nazi. but if if my wish has to be a color that is actually offered in zoe, it would be passionfruit. however, i really really love concord grape–it could become my signature color if only i could buy it.

I have a thing for the ocean since I moved away from it. We always seem to take things for granted so I have to go with Tide Pool colourway. The pattern, however, is gorgeous.

I’d have to say my favorite is Polly Pocket, just because I love the name of it!

Shelley

September 25th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Hands down, i LOVE the Polly Pocket colorway. My daughter played like CRAZY with them when she was little.. She even has a mansion somewhere. I KNOW i’ve stepped on quite a few of those little people too.

juniper berry, … or cocoa bean. shoot. or maybe feijoa. am i disqualifed for leaving 3 names? let’s go with the first! (or second). surprise me :)

Betsy Bouche

September 25th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

It’s a hard choice, but Feijoa is probably favorite color. I like your socks, your patterns are different than the usual. I’d have to choose another one of your patterns for Feijoa, though – using it for Xanthopyll would be like embroidering a blue jay with pink thread! I love Ensnared, maybe those.

Feijoa!! At least for these socks. I have to admit, I also love Acadia. So colorful and pretty!

Wow- beautiful yarn and BEAUTIFUL pattern. One of these days I am going to get braver with sock knitting. I love the Billowy colorway and the Dirty Sand colorway. Usually I can get choices narrowed down to 2, but someone has to help me with that final selection :) Thank you for sharing this pattern and the giveaway too!

What a cornucopia of wonderful fruit, blueberry, passionfruit, feijoa, sapote. tamarillo, lychee. juniper berry and cocoa beans, all wrapped in a scent of saffron.

I’d love to take them to Marrakesh, and play with peonies and iris in a tidepool on the dirty sand. Ah bliss, arcadia will be like this!
(Why yes, I did try to get as many as I could in – but they are really lovely colours, and your sock pattern is fabulous too!)

I like the color passionfruit in Zoe Sock Yarn.

I love the Zoe Feijoa, I wish I wasn’t on a yarn diet right now! I also love your new sock pattern, however, I have a question about the diagonal loops, I’m looking only at a picture but I’m afraid these will catch on boot zipper or jean hems, how do you think they will effect to durability of the sock?

Hunter Hammersen

September 26th, 2009 at 10:24 am

These particular socks haven’t been washed and worn yet, but I’ve used this stitch or ones similar to it on several other pairs of socks and never had any problems. The loops sit quite firmly against the body of the sock and I’ve never had one get caught. I’ve never had anyone mention a problem with it. There are several popular sock patterns (Leyburn comes to mind) that used slipped or stretched stitches, and I’m not aware of anyone having problems with them either. Hope that helps!

being a wearer of mostly dark colors (ok mostly black!), i think your bright socks will look awesome – shining out from my mary janes. so sapote should be the color, but dirty sand will also to the trick :)

thanks for giving us all this chance at some beautiful looking yarn!

This was a difficult decision as all the zoe color combinations are great. I believe that my next sock projuct would do justice to the color Corazon.

The leaves are turning here in Southern California even though the daytime temperature was 100F all last week. Yes, we do have an autumn here! (Xanthophyll and carotene appear as the chlorophyll dies.

My favorite color of Zoe is Acadia. I love both the place (thinking of Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park) and the combination of blue and orange complementary colors.
