Dippers

30 March 2009 · No Comments

I am, for once in my life (and much to the surprise of anyone who has met me), done ahead of schedule. Yes, that’s right, the Dippers socks are done being knit, done being photographed, and the pattern done being written. You may find the pattern here. You may also shower me with adulation, expensive presents, and, barring either of those, pictures of your completed socks.

One more picture, mostly because I’m smug and self satisfied. Possibly even smugly self satisfied.

The Vapors

29 March 2009 · No Comments

No I’m not dead. I am, instead, alternating between knitting and having the vapors. I think the vapors are underrated and are a perfectly valid coping technique for many of life’s ills. I am, as they say, bringing them back. Between fits of the vapors I’m knitting away, and have approximately 10/11ths of the second Dippers sock done (what? Yes I count the stitches in a sock and then keep track as I go along, and yes I do like irreducible fractions). With luck they’ll be done tonight, photographed tomorrow, and available on Tuesday…barring more vapors.

I’m pleased to announce the official name of the newest sock. They are now and shall henceforth be known as Dippers. The first sock is done and the pattern is 90% finished. It goes out to the noble and startlingly attractive test knitters/proof readers tomorrow, and should be up for general consumption some time next week. If your life will end if you are not one of said test knitters, find me on Ravelry and let me know. Holy crispy critters Batman, that was quick. I’ve been inundated (which is, by the way, totally awesome) and need no more test knitters. Thanks to everyone who offered and I promise the pattern will be up soon!

Super Stealth Knitting

What’s that Mr. Security Guard, you’d like to look in my purse? Sure, go right ahead. That? Oh, that’s my knitting…would you like to see? Out comes 3/4 of a sock and scads of yarn. Thank you Mr. Security Guard, I will enjoy the concert.

Now it’s hardly my fault that he was so distracted by the knitting that he didn’t notice the wee tiny camera tucked discretely in the back of the knitting case. Nope, not my doing at all. Such lax security leads to picture taking opportunities. Presenting the charming Mr. Folds:

Just. Keep. Knitting

22 March 2009 · No Comments

I have to learn to knit faster. Alas, I feel this is likely accomplished most successfully by spending more time knitting, and neither my wrists nor my schedule allow for any more time spent with yarn. Generally, if I knit every day, and knit faithfully on just one project (ha), I can get a sock done in a week. That’s a sock, not a pair of socks. The second one takes longer. That’s also just the knitting…not the dreaming up. If I actually swatch (granted, a hell of an if) it takes even longer. To judge from the (flattering, yet insistent) requests I’m getting for more sock patterns, this rate will simply not suit. I’ll have to practice all those speeches about patience being a virtue and good things re those who wait and other such platitudes. Pick your favorite and insert it here.

Have you resigned yourself to a nice wait yet? Excellent. Here’s one more pic to tide you over. I promise no more until the socks are all done. Any ideas for a name for these? I want something that’s just one word. Email me with your brilliant ideas.

Slant

As promised, the pattern for Slant is finished. The Ravelry page is here, and the pdf of the pattern is here. Thanks to everyone who said nice things about them, and special thanks to the valiant knitters who bravely tested out the stitch pattern instructions and pronounced them intelligible.

One last pic and then I promise to stop showing them off:

What’s that? Oh. Yes, I totally am that pale. It’s cold here, it happens. Not that it will be any different when it warms up, I just have more of an excuse at the moment.

The Yarn Shop Next to the Brewery

18 March 2009 · 1 Comment

The full phrase is “the yarn shop next to the brewery is open late on the night of the homebrewer’s meeting.” It has become our household’s way of saying serendipity. I realize that the phrase ‘the yarn shop next to the brewery’ is much longer than the word serendipity, but secret phrases needn’t be efficient.

We’ve actually encountered several yarn shops that are brewery adjacent (boy might say breweries that are yarn shop adjacent). We tend to find them on trips, one in New York and one in Bulgaria. Perhaps more importantly, there seems to be a yarn shop next to the brewery where boy’s monthly homebrew meetings are held. More impressively, he pointed it out to me as we were leaving one night (yup, he points out yarn shops). And, much to no one’s surprise, the evening of the meeting is the one night a week it’s open late. Serendipity indeed.

For a variety of reasons, I haven’t yet been able to actually visit the place. All that changes tonight. It simply has to be an auspicious event doesn’t it?
